Have you ever wondered how long barcode scanners in use since in the large retail stores? For many people, this is the only means of security and just store information about the product. Those many of the younger generation will not know that this system just around the seventies, even if the bar code does not pick up properly until the eighties.
Best known barcodes and barcode scanners (also known as bar code readers), there was no real monitoring system, monitoring and counting has been completed manually. This was a time consuming and tedious task, it often false and guesswork about the inventory. It is hard to believe that bar codes were not in use until almost forty years ago when the now is an essential part of modern life. This raises raise the question of how we function without bar codes?
Before the concept of automating the grocery checkout point, there was no such thing as a scanner or electrical device to the product code to read. In fact, it was to buy a real system for a long time, and were, therefore, grocery store owner threatened against theft and burglary. The only way to prevent this was to physically count each product one by one, the image on the paper, how many of the products had left and the correlation of how many had been sold for revenue.
As grocery stores were expanded and more products were in stock, it was important that an accurate inventory was completed, which was difficult to do without a sound system. The idea for an automated system was introduced to a group of ambitious students in 1932. Based at the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration, which began the group led by Wallace Flint a project to automate the grocery checkout system and its inventory system.
The group came up with a system in which purchasers of its products from a catalog that would choose the product in the catalog were appropriate tickets, that they might pull out. These cards were punched cards, which they would then hand the cash to purchase the products. The cashiers then paste it into a card reader to the product then pulled out of the closet and at the bar. A customer entrance and a simpler system for updating the book collection would be to follow it.
The system was a step in the right direction, but saw the problem as the reader was expensive to build and operate. Only one student, Bernie Silver, at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, overheard a conversation about the automation of a data collection system. Silver relayed this information to his colleagues and fellow teacher, Norman Woodland, who, upon hearing this spent the next two years working on a device.
The first bar code, Woodland was to come up with based on Morse code, stretched the lines vertically. This was then converted into circles, which is now known as the “Bulls Eye” code. Many years later, Woodland employment with IBM, and drove with his work on data collection. He used his time at home to a reader, which was large and expensive to build entertainment. In an attempt to win support in the prototype, Woodland approached his bosses at IBM, which an offer for the patent.
However, Woodland Silver sold the patent to Philco, which then sold it to RCA. During the 1950s and 1960s many inventors of the ideas for data acquisition and reader.
