what is recommended backup tape rotation schedule?
Question : what is recommended backup tape rotation schedule?
I have 300 gb now and growly slowly. I am planning to buy a LTO3 autoloader (holds 8 tapes) with each tape being 400/800 gb.
So I am planning on using 4 tapes for Monday to thursday for incremental. And 4 tapes for each friday in a month (retension time is then 28 days), and one tape for a monthly full backup. Can anyone tell me if that is the right approach. My goal is be able to restore anything by using 2 or less tapes. Any further clarification/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That is a pretty good plan. I am not sure if you mentioned it or not, but make the weekly one a full backup. That way in the worse case scenario that if something was lost on a saturday and you discovered it on the following friday that you could go back to a last week backup because the incrementals will not do you any good. This way the most you would lose is a week.
Other than that, your plans sounds more than adequate.
that sounds good but on the other hand u will have to restore a whole series of backup tapes in order to recapture all all of ur files because each bkup would only include changed files , there4 althouth the bkup process would be quick, but the restore process would be unwieldy, if not inpossible, so i would only do that if am tryin to save time.
