I’ve tried it on my pc before when I wasn’t thinking. I got some sparks when I barely plugged it in and luckily that was all before I yanked the cord out.

Well you have NAS and SAN storage options when not using drive subsystems within a server. They are starting to overlap somewhat. Typically you use NAS for your consumer or small business mulitmedia needs and SAN for larger environments. Wiki explains it well.

But your typical PC sucks for RAID, Connection Limits and Hot-Swap facilities. :o)

I run 11 Servers at my office, by myself and am currently looking at NAS and SAN for my next Storage project.

standard PC, good processor, nice amount of ram can start you out , with non home windows version, but you only can connect 10 people to the domain. or get mac server, windows server, any linux.

Well its been a year since my post….

I now have a Dell NF500 NAS Rack Server in place (1.3TB) and two DFS Root Servers so I can seamlessly expand my storage in future, or completely move data to another server and user’s won’t know a thing as DFS will just point to the new share.

Did this before, very successful.
