R & S-ers! What kind of anti-virus and/or anti-spam software would you recommend?
Question : R & S-ers! What kind of anti-virus and/or anti-spam software would you recommend?
I just found out that someone attempted to change the password of this account of mine, which is my central and most-important e-mail account. A day ago I visited a site an R & S-er recommended, and even though my PC warned it as a suspicious site, I still ventured inside it for a while.
So basically I’m convinced my PC’s been infiltrated by phishing bugs. Add to it the fact that its damn fcuking slow these days.
I used to use AVG, but since its proving to be pretty worthless (I update it everyday) should I change to a different anti-virus/anti-spam software?
I really really need some good opinions. Plz help me out. Thanks.
I’m sorry, Acid, I meant anti-spyware. My bad.

Firefox comes with anti spam
Anti-virus: I can’t believe no one mentioned “Clamware” : It is free and it updates it protection daily. And it has been rated the best for the last 2 or 3 years. Yes it is free, but after using it a few months, I bet you send them a small donation. I donate about $ 20 per year.

According to the support site, the entire server x10hosting was flagged as an attack site as some people were hosting malware there, they fixed it and I can’t find anything to suggest it involved the site.
It could be related to the phishing thing, but nobody else received any phishing emails… it’s certainly weird. I agree better safe than sorry, sorry about that though I had no idea.
I use Macfee and Norton. -

BitDefender is great in my opinion, and I agree AVG is useless now, it used to be a pretty good free anti-virus but now it’s fallen way behind.
BitDefender has;
Anti-Virus(duh :P)
Firewall
Antispam
Antiphishing
Registry Cleaner
Registry Recovery
PC Clean-Up
File Shredder
Duplicate Finder
Disk Fragment
Backups
File VaultOne of the great things is, depending of your level of computer knowledge you can set your profile to make things as newbie friendly or as advanced as you want.
Definitely no regrets with BitDefender. :)

okay,
first thing, and i do have to say it, this is not a R&S question.
second thing, the reason why i had to say it, you are blaming someone elses link.
this is sacralige, you know there are trolls here..
thirdly, dont call avg useless..i use it all the time and i happen to like doing semi shady things all the time which is normally asking for viruses, avg does the job for me.now, to actuaklly try to help.
since you got something that avg cant kill, then it is probably not yor everyday virus, or the more likley story, is that its not a virus.
you may have picked up something via a cookie or something, this is kinda common.
i know there is a way to hack gmail accounts with a firefox plugin and javascript.i dnot know how difficult it is, but im sure you can pull something simmilare for a yahoo account aswell.
empty your chache..delete all of your history, all of your cookies..
re login and change all your passwords connected to this email account.that is the security end of it..
now, if your pc is running slow, this may be a sign of inffection, or it may not be, you wont know until you clear it of spyware.use a program called spybot s&d(search and destroy) to search for spyware.
hope this helps..

As far as free ones go, I personally like Avast.
It’s got an easy to use interface, does a great job with both real-time protection and archive scans, and isn’t a huge resource hog if you turn off the “advanced graphical settings” feature.
You will have to register, but after that, they won’t ever contact you again if you don’t want. Nice.

HijackThis and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware are two other programs worth looking into.
Edit: I’ve seen a few people here mention Linux, and I must concur. If you’re really interested in keeping all that crap off your computer, you should consider dropping Windows altogether and trying out Linux. For the beginner, I’d suggest Linux Mint, but Ubuntu would be fine as well, it just takes a bit more configuring than Mint does “out of the box”.

First clean it out using housecall or some comparable free online scanner to establish some level of trust again:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/(although to be fair I would format the thing, lack of trust is an awful thing)
For antivirus, I’ve always been a fan of Kapersky (not free)
For antispyware, I’m partial to Spybot – it’s free, too.
For anti-spam, I’m not really aware of consumer products, we use barracuda which is more of a business solution. Did you mean antispam or antispyware? -
