While thy have many similarities, Opterons are designed for use in workstation and server environments, requiring the use of registered ECC memory, while the Athlons are designed for general purpose PCs and use less expensive non-ECC memory.
The Opteron has more Cache memory on chip. Cache memory is even faster than traditional RAM. Cache Memory on chip uses Static RAM. The most expensive ram there is. One of the main reasons they have not replaced dynamic ram.
The slowest type of memory is of course your hard drives, CD Rom drives, DVD drives.
