A ball-mouse is an optical mouse where the interaction of the ball and the rollers drives a pair of optical choppers. Cleaning the ball can be helpful, but the rolled and impacted ring of debris on the rollers has to be pried loose. The plastic clip on the removable cap of a ballpoint pen is good for this. You can then use the cloth to give the rollers a wipe. A laser-optical mouse avoids this problem, but is susceptible to surface fluff and/or hand-grease on the desk’s surface.
