Question : Getting paid like staff but doing Management?
I am 5 years out of school and will be sitting for my PE this year and have 5 guys that report directly to me, with a good deal of leeway and responsibility.. I participate in hiring and firing desicions, decide manpower and workflow type issues, keep organized, develop standards, etc. All the things that someone would do as an engineering manager. Granted, I have been untested before this role and didn’t really know I was getting into a management type role, but now that I’m here, I feel that I’m way underpaid. Engineering management, regardless of industry should be 80k+, right? Are raises something your employer has to be asked for? That’s my responsibility – shouldnt they know that I’m reasonably smart and can see my value on the market?

Companies set their own rate of pay. You can either ask for a raise, or find another job willing to pay you 80k.
