Is Veritas Backup Exec able to determine what files are on a backup tape?
Question : Is Veritas Backup Exec able to determine what files are on a backup tape?
Hi all,
I’ve been making regular backups from my Windows XP Pro machine on to DDS2 tape using Veritas Backup Exec 10 and I suddenly had a thought – it’s easy to restore files from tape when the files were written there by this installation of Veritas (when it has the tape catalogues recorded), but say (worst-case scenario) this entire machine were to fail, would it be possible to have a re-installed copy of Veritas read from one of these tapes and determine their contents?
Just wanting to make sure my strategy is sound :). Thanks for reading!

You need to go into the Veritas software and make a disaster recovery CD or floppy. This will contain the drivers that you boot off of to read your tape drive and restore from.
Very important!! You wouldn’t believe how many people never do this, then find it very difficult to restore after a disaster.
