Question : do I have to use special toner if I print my own checks on blank check stock?
If a business wants to print checks on blank check stock and has software that can print the specail MICR font for the bank routing and account information, is magnetic toner required by banks?
I know that toner is available, but want to know what happens at the bank if it is not used.

The bank will not be able to automatically read your check, so they will have to key it in by hand. If all your checks are like this, they will probably be calling you and telling you to stop it because it is slowing them down.
