What does a new model Kindle do that a cheaper netbook or notebook full computer cant do?
Question : What does a new model Kindle do that a cheaper netbook or notebook full computer cant do?
I have never used an Amazon Kindle but looking at their prices I see that they cost as much as some Notebook computers and they are more expensive than a lot of netbooks. What does a Kindle do that a comparable price notebook computer does not do? It seems to me that a cheaper netbook or notebook can do all that a KIndle would do but so much more. Please advise if you have experience with a Kindle.

The amazon Kindle is designed to read E books and that is all, while a netbook has an Operating System installed eg Windows XP

There is quite a lot actually. At least you cannot use netbook / notebook with one hand, or if you’re standing. Actually netbook can do the job of mobile too, if you connect it with some wireless device, but mobile phone is definitely more convenient.

The advantages of a dedicated ebook device in general are that they’re thin and light, usually possess an extremely long battery life, and the eInk displays most of them use are daylight readable (many also find it more comfortable to read off of compared to a backlit LCD). The Kindle offers the additional benefit of “WhisperNet”, which lets you purchase and download books wirelessly anywhere there is Sprint data service (or AT&T service, if using the new international version).

Primarily two things make the kindle attractive over a netbook for certain people. First off it has free internet. Though that is not likely to last right now at least you can log online, anywhere, for free.
Secondly it has a much much higher battery life. Depending on usage you can have the unit last 4 days with fairly constant use.
Downsides of course it can’t play video games or use some of the functions of a laptop. And also you need light to read it, it does not have a backlight.

It is designed for portable reading, just like MP3 or iPod instead of netbook. I own the Kindle 2 and I like it very much. If you like to read, I’ll say it is definitely a must have.

There is also a good news from Amazon that they just put a price slash on the Kindle 2, and it is now selling $ 100 cheaper than the price I got my Kindle…
