Question : I would like to know if specialized servers are required in a server based network?
My textbook is telling me that in server based networks, only a single log on is necessary to access all resources, because all of the resources are centralized. If resources are centralized why are there Application servers, Communications servers, Fax servers, Mail servers etc. .

There are a couple of explanations here.
1: most of these “servers” could purely be SERVICES on 1 server.
2: the use of an open directory service would allow a single logon to access all attached servers that utilize the open directory.
