Funny you should ask. I’ve had three of them fail in the last week–two of them were APC-brand, one Belkin. In each case it looks like the batteries have failed. So, which are “better”? Well, APC has a stellar reputation–Belkin not so much. APC has pretty good software that monitors the UPS pretty closely but the Belkin software is not that much different–a bit more intrustive (gets in the way sometimes).
Remember, that all (ALL) brands will fail in 3-4 years–long after the battery warranty is up and will require a battery replacement. Tip: find a local battery wholesaler or big retailer (not a retail store) that carries batteries. Many (not all, and not the new APC units) have standard batteries that cost less than $ 20 to replace. Replacements from APC can be over $ 60–which encourges customers to get a whole new unit. Consider that a UPS “impales” itself on a line surge or lightening strike (using metal oxide varistors (MOV)). These wear out as they are damaged when the strike or surge occurs (to one degree or another). This is the same part in a “surge protector” strip so these are not going to protect you after the first big surge or strike.
