Question : what’s the cheapest printer for making membership cards?
Has anyone used an ID printer to make membership cards, like the kind you get at the gym? I need a printer that can print in color on plastic cards.

I know its not the cheapest, but the industry leader in ID cards is Fargo.
You might check with a local printing company, many of the printing companies I do business with offer card printing services, which on a smaller scale is the most effective means of getting ID badges.
Most of Fargo printers start at about $ 2000, and while you may find somewhat cheaper units out there, in most cases, that’s about what you will want to expect. Most companies know this isn’t a part time/personal use type of device, and as such they jack the price up because its almost exclusively used in businesses.

Check it out, they have a great product finder application that can recommend just the printer for what you need based upon life expectancy of the card, how many a year you will print, whether it’s a ID card only, or a prox/card access card.
Hope this helps!
I own a gym and I got a nice Persona C30 http://www.alphacard.com/id-card-printers/persona/persona-c30.shtml printer from Alpha Card http://www.alphacard.com. They really knew what they were talking about, and the printer works just great for me. You can use printing services, but It’s nice to be able to print cards when I need them. Good customer service, you know? The whole setup was around $ 1,000 and I’ve had it for a couple years. It’s worth it.
