Did you notice that nobody else answered? That is because the question is very vague. There are lots of ways to answer this and depending on the way selected, the list would be too vast.

Frst, are you talking about processors for the desktop PC? Because calculators, watches, televisions, microwaves, cars, etc. etc. all have processors in them. I will assume you are talking about Desktop Processors.

Second, when you say type, do you mean brand? because there is Intel, AMD, IBM, HP, etc. etc. For now, I will assume you mean Intel

Third, are you talking about architecture? x86 -vs- RISC which has a smaller instruction set (op codes) but then we again get back into the brand, as that will often change also. For now, I will assume you mean to stick with processors that are used with the typical home computer, which mostly puts us in the x86 category.

Finally, you have to understand that in the old days the chips followed a basic improvement evolution. 8088, 80286, 80386sx, 80386dx, 80486, Pentium….This is where it got strange. The processors got specialized depending on your needs. The Pentium Pro and the XEON models came out. Today, there are about a odzen different models that come out at any given time. As for which one is most powerful, it depends on your needs. Some processors are better and processing graphical information, others are optimized for sorting vast amounts of data, and others are good at number crunching. Others still good and working in conjunction with other computers on a network.

Intel indicated the new method s of selecting a CPU is easier, but in fact it is not. I’ve been a network engineer for 30 years and it takes me a week or longer of sorting through everything to figure out what processor would be best for me.

Anyway, I hope this helped.
