how do i convert time into decimals for my timesheet?

Here is an easy way to do any sort of conversion. In this case the problem you are facing is converting the minute portion of your time, so you want to convert the minutes to hours (expressed as a decimal).

You know that anything multiplied by 1 will be itself, right? You also know that anything divided by itself is also 1 (3/3=1, -9/-9=1, etc.). You also know that 60 minutes is 1 hour. Therefore if we express 1 hr/60 min. this also would equal 1 (1 hr = 60 min, therefore this is esentially the same number divided by itself and thus equal to 1)

Now take the portion that you want converted and multiply it by 1 expressed as a fraction with the units you want eliminated as the denominator (bottom number) and the units you want to convert to as the numerator (top number). In this case:

15 min/1 * (1hr/60min)

Think of the units as variabalbes (x or y). We know that in this sort of multiplication problem we would be able to eliminate like variables that are expressed in the numerators and the denominators of either numbers in our equation. Thus we can cross out the “min” in both the numerator of the first number (expressed as 15min/1, which you should know is 15 min) and the “min” in the denominator of the second number. After doing this we are only left with the hr unit and can comple the eqation (15/60)hr or .25 hr.
