I use refill ink. It is cheaper but with time it damages the printer and cause a reduced printing quality.
If the printer is a cheap one like lexmark X1270 and hp F2610 better use refill
If the printer expensive use OEM to prevent lowering the printer lifetime
When using OEM though expensive, the printing quality and the printer lifetime will be higher

Of course OEM cartridges are better but they are also much more expensive.
I think the trade-off is between quality and quantity i.e. how much you print
and if these are photos where exact color-match quality matters:

Advantages of OEM versus Compatible/Remanufactured:
1. Color matching is in accordance to printer profiles in all applications (e.g. Photoshop)
In contrast non-OEM ink will not be exact. There is no difference when you print
black/white though
2. Installation is easier and 99% trouble free (versus I would say 85% trouble-free)

Disadvantages of OEM versus Compatible/Remanufactured:
1. Price
2. Price
3. Price

Some tricks will help make compatible/remans even more attractive such as buying from
the right shop (with guarantees, service and instructions) and performance evaluated ink
such as the ones that mention Durafirm or other marks. One such shop is

OEM. Mind you this is from personal experience and personal preference, but I’ve had printers get clogged and blocked print heads from third party ink.

As an IT Professional working and maintaining hundreds of printers in the hospital that I work in…

The printers that use OEM toners and inks have fewer problems than the ones using rebuilt and refilled ones from third parties.

OEM refills and rebuilt toners and inks however are ok if you need a price break.
