Question : Can I ask to view a gas station security camera tape without legal backup?
I have evidence that my roommate used my debit card at a gas station while I was asleep. Since it was a debit transaction, there was no signature required. Will they allow me to view security tapes by my situation alone? Or would I have to hold some kind of legal power (i.e. police, judge help, etc.)?

The tape would belong to the station. You should talk to the owner quickly because they may reuse the tapes. It is totally up to them to let you see it or not, without the law involved.

In order to do anything with it, you would have to call the police and report that you were robbed. They would have to investigate and in the end, the DA would not pursue anyway. That leaves the civil route. You can get an attorney and subpeona the station for a copy fo the tape and sue your friend if he is on the video. You would also have to sue him to recover all your legal fees. Since this is civil, he cannot be sent to jail when he refuses to pay the debt.
