Generally speaking, use the same parts on Linux as you would on Windows, with the exception of AMD processors, which sometimes aren’t so nice to work with on Ubuntu.
I would suggest an Intel Core2Duo, minimum, and 4Gb of Ram. you will need a 64-bit architecture in order to use all 4Gb. If you use 32bit, you will only be able to use 3.2Gb of it. SATA hard drives, of course are faster. DO NOT get an ATI video card. They REFUSE to write decent drivers for Linux. NVidia works wonderfully on it, though.

Usually the Ubuntu /Suse /Redhat /Fedora website has a list of supported hardware…
I recently dual booted linux and it does not recognize my graphics or sound card!(Read as bye-bye games).
