For example, I’m a busy business owner, always on the move. I use my travelling time to plan work, write books, deal with correspondence etc. If you pitched me for a notebook, I’d politely tell you to go away as there are always people trying to sell me things.

However, if you approached me with a solution for dealing with correspondence while I’m on the move you’d probably get me attention.

Think about the people who’ve bought your goods already and why they wanted them. Use that as your advertising pitch and target them closely. Don’t use generalist publications like magazines and newspapers. They’re too hit and miss. Go for the publications that your targets read and advertise in the places that they gather

We use Quickbooks. It works just fine, EXCEPT for one glaring omission: It’s inventory module is built around what I call the “gift shop” model. You buy widgets, and you sell widgets.

That’s not what we do. We buy components in a variety of units of measure. Those components are manufactured together to produce our product. QB is no help with our inventory or purchasing management.

The point is, your question is probably more complicated than you think. You need to really consider the specific functions that you are going to require, and then pick a system to match.

Quickbooks is 1) easier to use and 2) thousands less expensive. We do use the double entry accounting method and bill mainly for services but also for products with no problems. The only feature I miss in Quickbooks is the account lookup feature which I am hoping they include in the next version.
